Climbing Out of the Darkness of Postpartum Depression
Postpartum depression (PPD) is just one in a group of illnesses than can affect women either during pregnancy or after giving birth. Together, these illnesses are called perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and they describe how a new mother’s brain doesn’t feel like it’s working the way it used to. To raise awareness for moms everywhere that have suffered from perinatal mood and anxiety disorder, Postpartum Progress is holding a local Climb Out of the Darkness event on June 18 at Mid-Lothian Mines Park.
Climb Out of the Darkness events are held internationally on or near the longest day of the year to help shine the most light on perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. The event features mothers and others across the globe joining together to climb mountains and hike trails to represent their symbolic rise out of the darkness of maternal mental illness and into the light of hope and recovery.
