SpeakUp5k for Mental Health
The
sixth annual Dominion Payroll SpeakUp5k, presented by the Cameron K. Gallagher
(CKG) Foundation and Children’s Hospital of Richmond, will be a race for all
ages and levels on September 7 at Byrd Park. Starting at 9 a.m., the race
incorporates bubbles, silly string, a musical “rave” tent and a remarkable
section of large display boards with positive, inspiring quotes flanked by an
overarching tunnel of crepe myrtle. The race is stroller-friendly and
appropriate for all ages and running abilities. The CKG Foundation expects more
than 4,000 participants.
Created by 16-year-old Cameron K.
Gallagher, who died after finishing the Virginia Beach Shamrock Half Marathon
in 2014, the race is intended to raise awareness and ease the stigma associated
with anxiety, depression and mental health issues, especially in teens.
Proceeds support the Virginia Treatment Center for Children, a place where
Cameron received help and hope. CKG programs include school- and
community-based workshops and events.
