Yoga Instruction for the Deaf
Oct 31, 2019 06:06PM ● By Kyle HassNora Vimala Pozzi and Susi Durga Wilbur
Susi Durga Wilbur, a local social worker and
outdoor hiking and backpacking instructor who is also deaf, is offering two
Integral Yoga classes in American Sign Language (ASL) at the Integral Yoga
Center of Richmond, where she graduated as a yoga teacher last May.
Yoga is one of the many practices that is not
often available to the deaf community, and no ASL yoga classes were offered in
Virginia. That was the main reason Wilbur embarked in this long and demanding
training. Her class, geared to people that are deaf, is a very gentle form of
yoga that focuses on breathing, relaxation, meditation and gentle postures.
